SAMBO'S? What are you, like 60 years old? I have not seen a Sambo's since I was in single digits. Do you still have them up North? Can't believe it....

Hey Monica,

What is a "roach coach"?

I thought about tagging you Mike - but knew that you wouldn't appreciate it. :-)

Karen - Sambos does not exist anymore. The job was ages ago - decades ago. I am shocked that anyone even recognizes the name! I vaguely recall there were some problems with the name - racial issues.

DV - a 'roach coach' is a food truck. The back opened up and revealed the hot food and coffee. The side opened up to reveal the cold food and sodas. I had a construction route - all construction sites - back then mostly in the Aurora area of the Denver suburbs. I stood at the corner and kept my eye on both sides, added all the stuff everyone was buying (lightening fast in my head!) and gave change. I had a little change machine on a belt and a leather wallet stuffed FULL of cash for change. I would pull up to sites same time every day and blow the air horn. All the guys would come running to buy stuff. Of course in the summer I wore my short-shorts and looked cute as hell. I was SO young then! lol. Winter was hell though...I had little gloves that I cut the fingertips out of so that I could handle the cash really fast. I did that for about a year. It was a hard job but I had a hell of a good time. I got a percentage and made pretty good money.

Didn't Sambo's turn into Denny's? Our roach-coaches here are mostly run by Vietnamese, selling mexican food! They have a cook in the back and will do short-order too. :-) I like rib-eyes better than the filet nowdays, more flavor, I grilled some Monday night.

My favorite food in my Roach Coach days were the breakfast burritos. Dang - they were GOOD! One of the 'benes' was that I could eat and drink as much as I wanted.

I didn't cook in the truck. We bought prepackaged hot and cold food and started loading the truck about 5 a.m. every day. The hot food and coffee were piping hot and the cold food icy cold by the time I got to my first stop.
