I'm a 'Commie', now.
I learned this amazing fact about myself in the midst of a conversation with a self-described socialist.
As you know, I am an unabashed conservative. I like small government, self sufficiency, the sovereignty and strength of the USA, strong defense, capitalism, individual ownership of property - all that jazz.
I don't want to wear a 'Mao Suit' or a 'Lenin Suit'. I don't want to keep a picture of any 'Dear Leader' in my house. I don't like gulags - not one tiny bit. I don't mind paying for goods and services. I don't want to be told how much of a certain food that I should be allowed to buy. I don't think that 'it takes a village'.
I think that the accusation of 'commie' that was hurled at me was unbelievably ignorant, but it doesn't surprise me. Most lefties that I talk to have NO CLUE! It's a shame that in this day and age, after all of the prosperity and wealth that we have enjoyed in this country for decades, people still don't get a decent education. They don't know the difference between a small government conservative and a communist. They don't know that a small government conservative is not a fascist. They don't understand that statism is totalitarianism is communism is fascism and conservatives hate them all.

I actually did tell him that he was much closer to a communist on the political spectrum than I. I don't think that it registered though, Mike. You know how stupid they are sometimes. Don't let facts get in the way of ANYTHING!

Seriously though, you're right that it is the gross if not immoral lack of knowledge and education that shows itself with those types of comments.
LOL - I know, huh?? I had to explain to another guy that a conservative is not a commie - and that I was probably closer to an anarchist than a communist. Although I'm not an anarchist either. I do believe in the rule of law for example in protecting private property and enforcing contracts and stuff.
What kills me is that this guy is old enough to know better - but he chooses to remain ignorant. It's a sad state of affairs when seemingly intelligent people choose to parrot utterly ridiculous statements without knowing what it is they are saying.
