New Sunspot and a Ferocious Radiation Storm
I found, courtesy Drudge, a really cool site. It is named 'SpaceWeather' and it is worth a visit. The image of the sun that you see was taken by a man named Gary Palmer.
Enjoy!

Yeah I know, it is pretty neat. I saw something about this over at http://capnbob.us/blog/ and he makes the connections between sunspots and global warming, pretty interesting stuff, you should check it out.
Really cool picture though.
Hey Mike - my 10 y/old is working on an essay right now about global warming. The research that is being done showing that sunspot activity may affect our climate is going to be a part of that essay.
I totally love this image, too! Amazing when you think that the sunspots are about the size of a planet.
Well you just KNOW this radiation storm is caused by President Bush's environmental policies!
That's TWO great homeschool sites you turned me onto this week. Thanks!
Part of your daughter's essay should include the fact that we're coming OUT of an ice age, which makes global warming a natural progression.
A friend of mine wrote a similar paper in College - that of sunspot frequency and their measurable effect on global warming. Ignorant hippies driving around in a Prius look up and see the sun as a little disc in the sky, but compared to the size of out planet it's gigantic and there's no insultion in Space - the effects are swift. The Sun is the largest object in the entire solar system and contains more than 99.8% of the total mass of the Solar System (Jupiter contains most of the rest). Most of the other STARS in our galaxy are smaller than our sun by half.
But the Ecoweenies political belief place themselves at the center of the Universe, and insist that Man is the cause of Globla Warming...it's pure egotism.
Mike - Bush is such a dummy yet has control over the sunspots - amazing!
tshsmom - I am glad that you like the links. I love them!
dirtcrashr - I love the link YOU gave, too. tshsmom - check out DCs link!
We are still wading through data for the essay. We are also taking it easy on the didactics due to many holiday activities. I am planning on the essay being complete by the end of this week. We shall see how it goes - she hates to write. lol.
Oh - btw dirtcrashr, we once constructed a little 'map' of the solar system using toilet paper to measure distances. One square of t.p. was equivalent to, like, 18 million miles. They also suggested using a mini-van as the sun and, like, a pea for the earth and that would show the proportions of the sun to the planet. We used other objects for the other planets some bigger and some smaller. It was a wild exercise and I loved it. We gave up before we could get to Pluto (back when Pluto was still a planet) because the toiletpaper would have rolled right out the back window of the house into the alley.
It was a great exercise. I wish all kids could do these kinds of things.
Uh oh, that almost sounds like science.
You wouldn't know science if it hit you in the ass, Toady. Now go home.
