The Grizzly Sloth is a Mess.

Battling stomach virus, high fevers, Troll's birthday in which my dinner and butterchess pie came out AWFUL (I am NOT a good cook...), chasing puking kids around with pots and tissue and Tylenol, changing beds and pushing fluids - it's starting to look brighter for the little ones. Unfortunately Grizzly Mama (and now Grizzly Papa) are feeling NASTY. Joints sore, fever, yucky cough. Neither the Tylenol nor the Advil seems to be helping.

Do you know how many years poor Troll has had to put up with terrible meals on his birthday - all with the best of intentions on my part? Many, many, MANY. Sorry Troll.

I am preparing to do an another entry on Cubed's excellent series on education. I read some last night - Oh! It's good. By the time I was done the symptoms hit.

I am going to bed. It may be a couple of days.

Anybody have a good recipe for butterchess pie?! I've been searching and trying different recipes for years - none of them are what I remember eating at ALL. They've all been terrible. Although not a good cook I am usually a very good baker.

Sending you get well SOON wishes and psychic chicken noodle soup!

My favorite remedy is green tea with echinaecea (The Sleepy Time brand with zinc is a good one) and always drink it with a fresh squeezed lemon wedge.

You'll be right as rain in no time.

Thanks everyone. I love herbal teas Mike I'm sure I must have something decent in the cupboard. The only thing the older girl has been able to drink with her illness is lemon tea with lemon and honey.

I hope that this doesn't hit you or your nephew CH.

Thanks AOW. This is a nasty one.

Eeeuuuu. Monica, thank you, and my sincere sympathies!

OK, it's Grandma time: Rest, and drink lots of that hot tea!

I think it's something like 6 oz of black tea (it's the one time when black may trump green) will stimulate your immune system to produce HUGE amounts of gamma-interferon, a potent anti-viral substance (I can't remember whether it's 4, 40, or 400 times the normal amount, but it's a lot!).

Make sure it's freshly brewed in hot water, though; recent studies have shown that the most beneficial components of tea (both green and black, mostly the catechins) are extracted only in hot-water, and will not be present in tea allowed to brew at cooler (anything significantly below nearly boiling) temperatures. They also degrade quickly, so in tea brewed in hot water but left overnight will also not be particularly useful, health-wise.

Milk and sugar do not interfere with the benefits.

So for all good Southerners who regularly drink Sweet Tea, hoist a cup of fresh hot tea regularly, too!

My apologies for going on like this, but so many people are drinking tea these days for health purposes, it's important to know this stuff; pass it along!

:-)

Oh, you poor thing! The only thing worse than being sick, is being sick while you care for sick kids. Blech!

Get better soon!

(Have you checked epicurious.com or the Cooks Illustrated site for the recipe? That may be just the thing.)

Monica hope you and the family get well soon, feed a cold starve a fever so the saying goes. Can’t go wrong with plenty of hot drinks and rest with some small doses of Paracetamol. Can’t take antibiotics for virus though have to just see it out with home made remedies!

Try some hot milk with a touch of whisky/scotch, or honey tea. Don’t forget to rub a vapo rub decongestant for colds on your chest and back, sound like touch of flue, we have all just got over it here!

Thanks MamaGeph - you know how it is. Bleh is right. I'll try those websites when I feel better.

Sparky - all I have in the house is Vodka. I haven't had a drink in ages. We're slathered with Vapo-Rub though - and dosed with Tylenol and Tussin.

We have black tea Cubed - so tomorrow we will be drinking that. I'm afraid to drink the caffeine this late at night.

Thanks Ali - I'm drinking some sleepytime tea right now with honey and lemon.

I had an inspiration this evening and dug out my old herbal and homeopathic stuff. For years (before I had kids) I went homeopathic and hadn't taken antibiotics in forever. Tonight I made chamomile inhalations, with a drop of eucalyptus oil, for the girls and myself. (Troll declined the treatment!) Then we dosed up with some homeopathic meds after consulting the book. I need to get back into that. My stores of herbs are OLD and low! After having the babies I just didn't have time to deal with it. Then when they got sick I took them fast as can be to get antibiotics poured down their throats. It's terrible to see the babies sick.

Poor Dear Amazing Mamma!

If you lived closer to me, I'd tell you to drop your adorable little trolls over here, to jump in a hot bath and then, in bed for a few hours!

I gave up on pies! But if you want, I have a few amazing recipees for cakes.
;-)

Take good care!

Griz, I hope you're feeling a LOT better by now.

If you are, maybe this will have some appeal. Try this site (my lesser two-thirds is Alabama born, and regularly goes to it. Even I, as a truly limited cook, love to look at it!):

http://southernfood.about.com/cs/pierecipes/a/chesspie.htm

They have all KINDS of chess pies, and lots of other things too.

Get well! Gotta go eat. . .

GM,

Hope you get well soon. In the meantime, you might enjoy All right, I insulted Americans – but they are not planning to behead me. Also, I have more to add to our discussion over on Jeremiah's, but it has turned into an essay. I'll post it soon, somewhere, and give you a link.

Take care.

Move over! I hope there's room for one more in your sick bed! I just got it day before yesterday. I'm praying Donna doesn't catch my cold. That's what mine is, just a bad cold.

I awoke from my nightly adventure at 0320 and coughed and almost screamed with the burning pain in my throat. I warmed a half cup of milk; that didn't help much so I took a swig of Robitussin and sucked on a cough drop (Lemon) and that helped a little.
What helped me most was a cup of cofftee. A tea bag in a cup of water, two minutes in the microwave; stir in a half tsp of instant Folgers then sweetener and creamer to taste. That helped the most. I don't know if the tea, the coffee or just a warm drink with caffiene in it did it but my throat feels much better now.

I hope you all are better soon.

LOL, Troll sounds like my hubby. He doesn't trust my cures either.
Z's anxiety is showing improvement with homeopathy though.
Hope you're all up and around soon! ;)

CA - yeah...the livingroom is just a big flop room now - we're all flopped everywhere dozing off when we need a nappy. We have all found that a nice warm tea with honey/lemon is very soothing. I hope that you are feeling better soon!

Tshsmom - I'm glad that homeopathy is helping. I have to get back into it. I found that it takes a bit more time and patience when compared to popping some pill that clears everything up almost instantly.

The girls are sick - the older has pneumonia and is on antibiotics. (I almost had a heart attack when the pediatrician said that...) The little one's lungs are clear but I will need to keep an eagle-eye on her to make sure it doesn't progress to pneumonia. I have bronchitis - yuck. Troll refuses to see a doctor. *sigh*

Four days and you're still sick as a Democrat?

Up the dosage on the tea!

I hate to tell you how spring-like it is down here. The Redbuds, magnolias, lemons and oranges are blooming!

Hurry up and get well. I need help fending off the moonbats.

I'm just getting into homeopathy. You're right, it takes longer to balance the whole body system. In our case it's keeping Z off anti-anxiety drugs and all the side effects.
You guys definitely need the antibiotics. I had both pneumonia and bronchitis last summer/fall.
